Start an emergency fund without squeezing the whole month

Keep a reserve separate from planned purchases and build it in small steps.

Give the reserve a purpose

An urgent repair and a planned holiday have different needs. Separate emergency money from purchase goals so the same money is not counted as available twice.

Choose a reachable first milestone

For example, €300 takes ten €30 monthly contributions if the reserve stays untouched. This is not a universal target: variable income, dependants and essential bills change the amount you need.

Understand the monthly effect

Setting aside €30 reduces the margin for other choices by €30. Moving money between your own accounts is not another consumption expense. Avoid counting both a transfer and an allocation as two expenses.

Use it and rebuild

When an actual expense occurs, record it in its category and revisit the reserve. Adjust the plan if income falls. A savings contribution should not make essential monthly bills unaffordable.

Put it into practice with WalletLane

Record what actually happens, compare it with your plan and revisit your goals when the month changes.
